I can't get this menu item to work... Did I miss something in the syntax?

<submenu text="Jog Wheel Forward Spin">
<item text="Yes" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'yes'" hascheck="true"/>
<item text="No" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'no'" hascheck="true"/>

This is not a menu
It's a submenu

Correct syntax would be

<menu >
<item text="Jog Wheel Forward Spin Yes" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'yes'" hascheck="true"/>
<item text="Jog Wheel Forward Spin No" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'no'" hascheck="true"/>
</menu>


OR
<menu>
<submenu text="Jog Wheel Forward Spin">
<item text="Yes" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'yes'" hascheck="true"/>
<item text="No" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'no'" hascheck="true"/>
</submenu>
</menu>
 
<submenu text="Jog Wheel Foward Spin">
		<item text="Yes" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'yes'" hascheck="true"/>
		<item text="No" action="setting 'touchWheelForwardspin' 'no'" hascheck="true"/>
	</submenu>
	<submenu text="Jog Wheel Back Spin">
		<item text="Yes" action="setting 'touchWheelBackspin' 'yes'" hascheck="true"/>

This is one of many submenu items I have in my 'Top Menu' but they don't have checks nor do they activate the function.
I've tried with and with out quotes around yes and no. Still no joy. All of my other submenu items work fine.
I guess the better question is: can I call those actions or are they limited to just going into settings and changing them there only?
I already have menu opening and closing for the entire menu set.
