Topic: Phase Pro upcoming support questions/expectations.
I don't normally ask questions about devices that haven't had an official support release announcement, but I'm interested in this one (as a user of the original Phase Essential) and details provided if they can be made available.

The Phase website reports that HID integrations are coming soon for Phase Pro, with VirtualDJ being on the list. However, one of the things these new remotes allow for is customizable MIDI button layouts on the remote (the demos I seen show it working with Serato), and the website doesn't explicitly say anythinf about that.
I'm actually wondering:

  • Is this custom MIDI button functionality going to be supported as well in VirtualDJ?
  • If it (Custom MIDI buttons) is going to be supported, is the current MIDI mapping interface going to be used (MIDI Activity to get the key + manual vdjscript or eyedropper select of skin element) or something else?
I ask about this one because it seems like layouts with MIDI can be added/removed at user discretion (previous MIDI key descriptions/assignments could be invalidated), while the current interface sort of assumes a static description of devices.

I can't tell you how the end mapping will be.

However, I can tell you this:
"Other" software is not so flexible when it comes to MIDI mapping. While VirtualDJ can be trained to accept ANY MIDI message to activate ANY "command", other software don't.

So, for VirtualDJ the "PLAY" button can be ANY button / MIDI message.
However, for Serato, as an example, the "PLAY" button must always be MIDI message 0x0B

So.. for "other" software it makes absolutely perfect sense to have a "bank" of available MIDI buttons with their corresponding MIDI messages that the user can select to have.

With VirtualDJ it doesn't make sense to go that route, but it is 100% possible to implement.

So yes, the functionality will "somehow" be there, but we can't say anything more at this moment. :)

Wow, they really went for the worst way of handling that.

Interesting...so that sort of makes the possibilities of the value a particular button can send for a function deterministic (e.g. if you create a PLAY button it would always send 0x0B). The lack of flexibility might actually be a gain here, because you can then pretty much map a value coming in to a functionality on the remote (like you know it's a play button on the remote being pressed).
It's probably too early to confirm details but at least there is sone confidence in support of the full featureset instead of a half bakes state (HID control but no MIDI).

Thanks for all of that information @PhantomDeejay 🍺

Man idk though, for $800 bucks I could get another set of Phase along with a DDJ SP1 or the XP sub controller and have waaaaay better functionality.

I don't doubt there's $800 bucks' worth of tech behind it, but I don't think I can justify that price plus I've moved more over to standalone playing over this past year.

Have to wait and see once its released.

Tbh I agree with you totallu. I wasn't asking because I was plannng to jump immediately, as it drops - essential works well enough for me and my needs. I was moreso asking us to know what to expect of its functionality as potentially buyers, if we ever were to consider it as an option.

I personally would have liked if they only made all the tracking improvements and probably kept RCA + DVS ability. Chasing a rotating screen in poor lighting conditions was not on my radar.
