Forum: VirtualDJ Skins

Topic: Can I commission someone to make me a skin?
I really just want a variation of the ESSENTIAL skin as follows....

1) the browser is not visible, but there's a button added which makes the browser appear and take up most of the screen.

2) The other change is to remove the FX section, but add a new FX section with 6 FX and 2 parameters each. (I'm using a Rane One)

3) The final change is to move things around a bit and then enlarge everything to take up the entire screen (since the browser is now hidden, everything will need to be restructured, pads and looper goes under the turntable)

The end result is that I can now use my iPad as a mirror to my MacBook, and everything is big enough that I don't need to squint or look closely at the iPad to see what I'm doing. iPad takes up much less space in my setup and sits low to the mixer. I don't like having my MacBook blocking my face during my sets.

I do that kind of thing,
I'm imagining an fx page that replaces the browser which is pretty easy.
I wouldn't be that keen on enlarging everything because some stuff would be graphics work [like the platters] and that takes a lot of time, and "could you make it 5% bigger" could actually be "do everything again", enlarging too much stuff it stops being a tweak/rework and it becomes a whole new skin [lot more work and more cost]
other bits like larger pads are easy enough.

PM me your budget, but I'll give you a chance to talk to other skin makers, there aren't many but we've all done different tweaks to stock skins previously and somebody might have something they're already made close to what you need [so might be less work / cheaper]

I made a skin using the skin builder. It's close to what I want, but when I mirror my screen to my iPad the text on the FX nobs goes crazy. You can have a look.

I also used Procreate to draw what I'd like my skin to look like. After trying so many skins, I think the Haunting skin is great, and it has a tablet version. I plan to run VDJ on Mac, but mirroring the screen to my iPad. I'm still wanting to make more edits and tinker around with things myself for now, but I think I might end up caving and paying someone to help me lol. Anyway, have a look:

After playing around with it, I have an updated idea for my ideal skin:

1) Features and style of the "Haunting" skin
2) Layout of my created skin
3) Turntables from default essential skin
4) Full screen skin with browser totally hidden, but nearly full screen when zoomed.

I will try to use the frankenstein method since everything I want is in 3 skins I have. Maybe I can succeed on my own, but if it's a quick 20 dollar job for someone then I think I'd rather just pay. I could pay more, but then it makes me more determined to solve it myself.

I'll post one more image later after I make it perfect...the photoshopped image is missing some minor details, but I think it's enough to get a price estimate from someone?

It looks interesting, but also a job that will take a few days. 🤔

Any tips?? lol...I was gonna start tomorrow since I have a full day off with nothing to do....but I just got covid so maybe I won't try too hard.

Something tells me 50 bucks isn't enough to get this done...I made a couple game mods before so maybe I should be able to get this done myself...

skinning is very like html, not exactly but that kind of feel.

Maybe I could help you but I don't have that much free time, so it's not something I can finish in 2 days.

I actually dove in and have been making it myself. ChatGPT has written lots of bad code, but I found I can take snippets and code blocks from working skins and then show it to ChatGPT and it can learn the right syntax etc. from working skins.

Here is what I have so far. It's optimized for iPad, but after I finish it I'll make a 2nd one with dimensions optimized for a MacBook...and then a button to switch between the two. I've spent hours...days....but it's rewarding.

good start, good work, your own skin is a forever project, you'll never finish, but you now own the software a bit more than a default user.
