I'm not sure if everyone is talking about the same thing here. I think impressionsdj is talking about a long piece with various tracks - like the Pink Floyd he mentioned. As these tracks all run in to each other anyway, I doubt there will be a problem. I think the original question is about playing tracks that DON'T naturally run in to one another. If I'm wrong, my apologies.
As someone who writes and records songs in collaboration with people over the Internet, it is true that when you encode to MP3, a tiny bit of silence is added to the start and end of the track. It's not much but it can throw out the sync. To get round this I have started using .wma files. They sound better too.
